The sidebars are added in the templates with the widgetarea shortcode. The setup is explained in the readme.html (inside the zip file). If you do it step by step like explained there you will have the sidebars like on the demo website.

The sidebar on the blog frontpage is the "Main sidebar". The categories is a bfnav shortcode in a page (imported in step 4) added to the main sidebar and the portfolio sidebar (custom sidebar created in step 5) with the "bf page" widget (step 7).

If you want to create a custom sidebar, just add a sidebar name in the "Custom Widget Area" input field in the theme setting. To use it in a page/template use the widgetarea shortcode (the id parameter is the name of the custom sidebar. see the templates that is imported with the step 8 for an example how it's used on the demo website of the child theme).

hi there,
great new child themes!!
how can i make sidebar menu? i've created new categories, but they're not showing up. should i do it by using a widget?
on this example, you have a sidebar menu http://www.vfxdude.com/childtheme/bfct02/ which is different to the one on 'portfolio' page. how can i achieve that?

thanks,
Adam

That is not version 1.4.1.4 of the theme setting. The child theme doesn't have a separate theme setting, but rather it's own tab. Something has gone wrong with your upgrade, here's how to upgrade. The folder name must be bigfeature under themes (same themes folder as the child theme). It doesn't work if you have installed the bigfeature-wordpress-theme.zip file you downloaded (it is the bigfeature.zip file inside that should be installed).

I've upgraded to Big Feature 1.4.1.4 and have been following the setup instructions for bfct01. I don't see the "Enable Custom Templates Feature" in the theme settings for the child theme.

Screenshot of Theme Settings for bfct01: http://screencast.com/t/BfhAhMFdh

I'm guessing I've missed something on setting up the child theme properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love the new child theme.

I have said lately in the forum that I will create some before christmas, and intend to do that. These will just be simple structures intended as starters for developers though.

I have plans to create a library of free child themes, but just have not had time for it yet. Paid jobs are prioritized.

that area is not only supposed to hold the slider, it is first and foremost for the feature sized images/videos/galleries/sliders (in single post view and also the fronpage of the blog).

To remove this area, so the featured stuff is like the default. In functions.php (of the child theme):

remove these (or comment out with //):

add_action( 'bf_top', 'featured_area' );

Thanks Nephilim :) My custom.css-file is a bit messed up with stuff I am or have been testing, so I advice you to use FireFox in conjunction with Firebug, as this is way better to get a good overlook over the CSS-formating of my page.

As for the php, I've only altered the functions.php-file in the bfarea child theme by moving the navbar to the top of the page.

If you've got some specific questions about my page I will answear to the best of my ability.

use one of the child themes (bfwide or bfarea) and modify the css. With the child themes you can create custom header functions and add searchfield or whatever. This requires some php knowledge though (just checkout the functions.php of the child themes available).

1. Rename the folder to bigfeature2.
2. Rename it in the top of style.css to bigfeature2.
3. In style.css of the new child theme, change "Template: bigfeature" to "Template: bigfeature2".

Hi,

I use Bigfeature for a long time and won't get lost of it. Unfortunately, I had changed many php files in the past, which I will keep as they are for an old blog of mine (never change a running system ;-)

Now I would like to start from the scratch at my Wordpress multiblog installation with another folder of - for example - "BigFeature 2", where I use the newest BF theme download and its child themes.

I will keep at my blog 1 - for example - within my multiblog system the old Bigfeature theme, and would like to create a new blog within this system, using the new "Bigfeature 2" and its child theme BFnav.

I don't want to use a new child theme for my new blog with the old Bigfeature - because I had modified too much, that I cannot use for my new blog, but I will keep the old blog.
So I want to use the newest download of a "fresh" Bigfeature for the new site :-)

My questions:

- is it possible, to use Bigfeature twice in a (multisite) installation of Wordpress 3.2, by naming the second theme "Bigfeature 2"?

- what does it mean for the child theme BFnav, that I would like to use with my "Bigfeature 2"?

- Does it work, to re-name the downloaded BF folder to "Bigfeature 2" and the theme name within its CSS - or must I change the theme name in any other (PHP) file, too?

Thanks in advance for any help.

sounds very, very good, vfxdude, I'm looking forward :-)

Another good idea for a child theme is a site, that somebody created on base of Bigfeature:

http://randallmurrow.com/

it looks good. I'll add it to my child theme inspiration list (I will probably create 5-10 free child themes this fall).

Hey, just ran into this WordPress Theme:

http://wpshower.com/demo/?theme=imbalance

I would love to see a Big Feature Child theme in that style. One thing that I would change is the ability to toggle a clickable headline caption onto of the image.

I think that it would be possible and recreate this with short thumb codes but I still havn't gotten the hang of those. :-(

this function is called in comments.php (in the root of the theme) with this call:

wp_list_comments('type=comment&callback=custom_comment');

the custom_comment can be changed to something else and then copy the function into the child theme and rename it to whatever is called there.
