The sidebars are added in the templates with the widgetarea shortcode. The setup is explained in the readme.html (inside the zip file). If you do it step by step like explained there you will have the sidebars like on the demo website.

The sidebar on the blog frontpage is the "Main sidebar". The categories is a bfnav shortcode in a page (imported in step 4) added to the main sidebar and the portfolio sidebar (custom sidebar created in step 5) with the "bf page" widget (step 7).

If you want to create a custom sidebar, just add a sidebar name in the "Custom Widget Area" input field in the theme setting. To use it in a page/template use the widgetarea shortcode (the id parameter is the name of the custom sidebar. see the templates that is imported with the step 8 for an example how it's used on the demo website of the child theme).

hi there,
great new child themes!!
how can i make sidebar menu? i've created new categories, but they're not showing up. should i do it by using a widget?
on this example, you have a sidebar menu http://www.vfxdude.com/childtheme/bfct02/ which is different to the one on 'portfolio' page. how can i achieve that?

thanks,
Adam

changing styles for any widget can be done with css. Use Firebug to find what to change, example:

.widget_nav_menu .sub-menu a { font-size: 11px; }

Hello!
I'm using bfwide and in the general theme settings is 'Show the Navigation' off.
But still the home nav is showing. Every time I remove the home menu item from the navigation inside the BF settings and save it, it pops back again immediately and so it is showing up in the menu...
What to do to prevent this from happening?
Thanks in Advance!

Thanks.
This works fine.

But:
if I use two sidebars and I move Sidebar2 to the left in the theme settings, the site design gets messed up.
The content and right sidebar (sidebar1) go below sidebar2 instead of next to sidebar2.

I've tested this on different sites but always get this problem.
Am I doing something wrong or is there any solution to this?

Thank you for helping me out.

adding this at the bottom of functions.php will do it (before the ?>):

remove_action( 'bf_header', 'bf_navigation' );
add_action( 'bf_before_content', 'bf_navigation' );

You can add a if(is_single()) around them to only do this in for single view pages. If you add them to a child theme you need to add the remove_action in a hook the the wp_head (see other child themes for examples).

changing some styles is also necessary:

ul.navigation { margin-bottom: 20px; }
.feature { margin:0; }

you need to use Firebug. there you can just copy the top style for what you need to change into the child theme. then you will get the highest specificity. and also check in Firebug that the styles you added have taken command.

Specificity might be tricky, but with Firebug it's much easier.

Hey Roger,
it´s in the style.css child theme. But with no effect on the drop down of the wp menu.
I´ve set the classes in the wp menu to sf-menu. But still no effect. I´ve just need to change the background and hover colour of the menu entries in the drop down.

A.

add the css to a child theme style.css, and it's easier to override with specificity. You can copy styles from firebug or the main style.css and modify.
