I am using bfthumbs in a portfolio page (like your portfolio page) and am using the excerpt to show the reader what I want them to see. However, this theme will throw away all the formatting I have. I would like bullets and be able to adjust my own readmore in "thumbnail posts".

I also need help on the excerpt. Styling via the css is easy... I only need to know how to get rid of the 'dot' between the date and the excerpt content.

Maybe I need get to rid of bf_excerpt and use the wordpress expert function. How do i do this?

to change the bfthumbs edit the bfthumbs_func in theme-functions. The bf_excerpt function is called from there.
or you can set the "Limit thumbnail text" setting to 0 and the thumbnail text will be stripped for html, but it will show the whole post content too then.
The read more link is easy to adjust in css.
go here http://jeanpaulhaire.com/portfolio/ and use firebug to debug the read more link on the first portfolio excerpt to see how i changed the style.css. (look at the one with the arrow, not the ...)
please note, that all my content is total dummy content and the site is under development. i hope this helps you with the css.
ps, i am using the excerpt feature rather than the more link.. i like the control better.

There must be a bug in bfthumbs or theme_functions, cause I enter something along the lines of "testing: 1st, 2nd, SS, OF" and it will not post all of my excerpt.
Yeah, make sure you are using bfthumbs, not the portfolio template, and put "Position: Catcher, 1st, OF" for your excerpt and see what you get.

Also, let say I don't add an excerpt and I want to use the <!--more--> in the post. It doesn't seem to work, It just posts every thing. Hmmm... I still think there is a bug here or I don't have something set up right.

well, I changed the thumbnail excerpt in 1.3.3...it's cutting off the excerpt. The reason I did this was because the photoblog template is using the excerpt, and that could cause long excerpts to be written. maybe not the best solution...
you can change this (in the bf_excerpts function in theme-functions.php):
