Changing avatar icon

I'm almost finished with my site but I've run into one more minor issue. I can't change the default avatar. The Gravatar icon remains no matter what I choose in WP Settings.

edit: the avatars remain the same just in post comments. In the admin panel and log-in widget I can see they changed.

search for ",$default='<path_to_url>'" and replace with nothing in comments.php (in library/functions).

Sorry, that didn't work. If by replace you mean erase, that's what I did but I still get the gravatar icon. This is how it looks now.

<?php echo get_avatar($comment,$size='48' ); ?>

that seems right, did the same change and it works for me..I can change the default avatar from the wp settings.

As you said, I've deleted the ",$default='<path_to_url>'", and replaced as <?php get_avatar($comment,$size='48'); ?>. My comment form shows like this:
