I would like the category widget to link to thumbnail template pages, displaying all the posts for that particular category (similar to the instructions you posted here: http://tinyurl.com/yzotdok). Currently, the category links display all posts in a specific category as full posts.
Is there a way to customize the category navigation to link to a specific page?

you can use the redirection plugin to redirect categories or posts to pages. If you want to redirect all categories to pages, then it have to be coded. Probably a filter on the the category widget will do it, but it might be better to do this manually with the plugin.
you can also enable thumbnail view for the archive, so the posts displays as thumbnail posts there too. the setting is called "Show the archive posts as thumbnail posts" (under misc).
