Oh, one more thing:
I'd very much like the feature image to NOT show up on the homepage. Yes, I've clicked the "Disable the feature image on the frontpage" box in the settings. That got rid of the feature image once but then it came right back. I've tried to unclick, save, reclick and then save again, but it isn't going away.
Is there something else I must do to remove the feature image from the homepage? Or can I make the change manually?

the default post image for the first post is the feature image on the frontpage of the blog. Disabling that theme setting will make the first post image to become content width instead of feature size (span above the sidebar). If you can link to your website I can very easily see what's going on.
The code that finally got rid of the frontpage feature image for me actually turned out to be:
if ($image = get_image($postType, true)) echo $image;

disabling the feature image does not remove the image, just shows it in the content area instead (still above the title). if you only want the image for the the thumbnail, but not the post add the image url to the "Thumbnail image URL" input field below the post editor instead of any of the other methods of setting the default post image.
