Great update with the 1.4!
I've been trying to find a way to get the bfthumbs to have an external link. I'm using the bfthumbs to show sponsors/partners and would like the thumbnail to link to their site instead of the blog post. Could I do it with a custom field or something?

in 1.4 I added a filter for the bfthumbs called bfthumbs_content, it takes an array with all the thumb content, including all the links. So you can global the post in that filter function and change the links. If that sounds a bit too mr.cody, then you can just redirect the links instead with a 301 redirection plugin.
Maybe a thumblink custom field is something I will add...
I'd recommend using Simple 301 Redirects. The "Redirection" plugin is a little buggy.
Hey, another question regarding these links, I need them to have _blank as well, as they are links to partners pages, the client wants them in a new window. Any easy fix to this? I tried to add target="_blank" in themes functions for bfthumbs but with no luck.

well there's where the filter comes in, but there are always easier ways to do stuff though. Like add it with jquery.
1. add a class to the bfthumbs shortcode: class="mythumbs"
2. add this code to the page where the shortcode is:
<script>jQuery(function($){ $('.mythumbs a').attr('target', '_blank') });</script>
